Motherhood is the Reason I Create
My sons are why photography means so much to me. As a new mother, I started documenting my children's everything: bubbles piled high on heads in the bath, wobbly steps on chubby legs, and messy dinner faces. Capturing it all on with my cell phone at first, learning from mommy photoblogs and trial-and-error. And then using a point-and-shoot camera, until my sweet husband gifted me a wonderful camera, there was no stopping me.
The ironic part of me being a photographer is I have too few of photos of me when I was in the thick of motherhood and my boys were really little. I wish I was in the frame with my children, that someone had jumped in and said, "Oh, you look so cute with your hair in that messy bun, let me grab a quick photo!" To capture you in this season of your life, it does not have to be perfection because parenting means imperfection. It's messy. So maybe it is those little little sandy hands, holding yours while you play at the beach or creating a moment in your own home for you to treasure and look back on with joy.
These are the events I'd like to capture with you and your people.
Marriage: A Friend for Life
My husband and I met when we were both in college- Go Cougs! It took a minute to realize he was the right guy for me, but once I did, I couldn't wait to get married and start our lives together. And we did! We had a wonderful small town wedding in my hometown. When you get married in a small town, guests you didn't even know you invited arrive because your mother ran into them at the grocery store and told them to come - sorry mom! If it isn't a metaphor for marriage, I don't know what is. Plan all you want, life is unpredictable. Either roll with the situation or get upset and I choose to go with the flow.
Marriage is awesome, laughing until you can't breath. It's simple and light. Some days it requires more patience, especially once the novelty wears off. And you find yourself doing the boring things like figuring out whose turn it is to take out the recycling. Through all the ups and downs of life, my husband is my best friend; he's funny and even-tempered, while I am more spontaneous and a bit of a daydreamer. While we may be different, we are the same where it counts. We have moved all over the country now. I know my home is always with him. We'll be hand-in-hand, together. He's my beloved, forever.
The Gravity of Photography
PHOTOGRAPHY DRAWS US IN. IT'S MORE THAN CLICKING A BUTTON.
It's the closest thing to magic we have. Photography stops time and allows us to time travel. To the moment you and your sisters stood tall, smiled huge, wearing the dresses your mother stitched together. It's your grandmother and grandfather sitting beside you, holding your baby sister for the very first time. The moment your mom read a book and held the toddler you once were, your eyes glued to the pages, thumb stuck in your mouth. Photos transport us to the smell of a baby fresh from a bath, the leathery texture of your grandfather's strong hands, the taste of cherries picked fresh that morning still warm with sunshine.
It reminds us of warm arms that held you near and loved you deeply. And for just a moment, magic happens and you can return to the exact moment in time.
